It was a crush—literally—getting into the Cartier mansion on Fifth Avenue at the jeweler's celebration of 100 years in America. Ask the fashion editor whose foot was squished by Justin Timberlake's planet-sized bodyguard (turns out this was a minder with a conscience, though—"I am so, so sorry," he said, while JT distracted the limping lady with flattery). Things were just as snug over at the elevator. "My, this is cozy," said Sir Elton John as more and more people piled in. "I might go mad in here."

Whatever it took to get upstairs was worth it, though. "Did you see the big one, with 230 carats?" Kate Hudson asked Zac Posen, remarking on a ridiculously large diamond necklace. "I just want to make love to it." She wasn't the only one feeling the love. In a room wallpapered with images from the book Bruce Weber was commissioned to make in honor of the centennial milestone, Tory Burch waxed rhapsodic about the photographer's work. "It's so original, so romantic, so America," said the designer. "Maybe in a few decades, when I can afford him, he can shoot my campaign." In the meantime, she'll have to settle for more of his books—just not this one. Turns out Cartier didn't produce enough in time to sell them at the fête. "I guess I'll have to come back," Dr. Lisa Airan said. "Not that I'll mind."
